| Systems are available today in several forms:
Hard wired systems such as Mbus are typically used in self contained buildings where a cable can easily be installed. Modern heat meters, generally have the communication protocol on board and can act as pulse gatherers for two other meters. Separate pulse gatherers are available where heat meters are not being used. The Mbus may be up to 4km and the number of meters connected is unlimited.
Mains born systems are also used in buildings where the meter reading system is contained within the owned cable infrastuture. Permission must be obtained from Regional Electricity Company to use their cables outside the building.
Radio communication systems can be used on dispersed sites such as military establishments or to bridge a gap between two buildings on a hard-wired site. The low power transmitters do not interfere with internal communications or radio systems.
Telemetry systems can be used where there is a compatible telephone line using shared line technology. Cellular communications are being developed as well.
A computer, which may be local or remotely connected by modem, interrogates the meters and presents the information in a format for manipulation in spreadsheets or proprietary software.
Switch2 offer bureau services especially to Facility Managers to read meters both by AMR systems or manually, bill, collect charges and provide a reconciliation of charges and consumption.
